What is the 'Dead Turtle' logo?

Some real talk, if we may - you might be seeing this logo on your favourite brand of wipes soon:

Pretty ugly, right? Well, there’s a reason behind it. It’s known as the ‘Dead Turtle’ logo, and it’s here to inform everyone about the plastic content contained inside your everyday products and the harm they can have on our lovely planet.

The intention of this logo is to provide transparency into the effect of SUPs (Single Use Plastics) on the planet for consumers.

First, though, we’re here to tell you that you won’t see this anywhere near the packaging of the Cheeky Panda wipes.

All natural, baby

The Cheeky Panda wipes (baby, anti bac, handy) are made from bamboo, water, and… not a whole lot else. That means they’re natural, eco-friendly, and sustainable, causing little negative effect on the planet.

What that means in non-eco-speak is – once you’ve used them, they’ll naturally biodegrade over time and become one with the Earth again. Unlike most wipes on the market, The Cheeky Panda won’t stick around for years, needlessly killing turtles, like you can see in the logo above.

There are no plastics in the Cheeky Panda products, just bamboo and panda love, got it? Good. Glad we got that cleared up. That’s why this logo won’t be garishly gracing the front of our pretty packaging.

What about those other wipes I can buy?

Those are great. BUT. If they have this logo on the front, they’ve got plastic in, friends.

The EU are introducing labelling requirements for certain types of products, to inform customers about their plastic content, disposal options that are to be avoided, and harm done to nature if the products are littered in the environment. And most wipes you can buy on the market are included in this. (Not the Cheeky Panda's, just to re-reiterate).

Single-use plastics (SUPs) make up 50 per cent of all litter found on European beaches. The EU conducted a study to find that around 90 per cent of all single-use plastics found on European beaches consist of just 10 different types of items. So, the EU decided to target these specific items in its SUP directive.

For the top 10 SUP items for which alternatives are not as developed yet, the directive makes other requirements. To make consumers more aware of which products contain plastics and how to dispose of them correctly, period products, wet wipes, tobacco products and cups will need to have warning labels.

So instead of banning these kinds of products completely, the EU has introduced the Dead Turtle label.

That means, if you see the Dead Turtle logo on the front of your favourite wipes, the brand is liable to cause long-term damage to the Earth, not just to turtles.

It also means that any wipes that need the logo on the front that don’t have it can’t be sold.

Quite a big deal…

This requirement set by the EU is a huge deal. It means that these brands using single-use plastic are being held accountable, and customers have more transparency when it comes to knowing what effect buying them has on the planet.

Again, we’ll never have this logo on the Cheeky Panda products packaging. The entire Cheeky Panda product range is created and curated with sustainability at the forefront.

They are going to continue to ensure their products never need to feature a dead turtle on the front because of their negative impact on the planet.
