Dr. Andrea Veres, a plant doctor, founder of Agrologica Kft. and mother of two small children. She lives with her family in a house with a garden and several shepherds graze in their area. Since knitting is a family tradition, during one conversation she asked the neighboring shepherd to whom he sells the wool, to which he replied that he did not sell it to anyone. There is no one to take it, the yarn factories have closed, so the only problem is with it. It is even difficult to burn it. Andrea was completely shocked when she heard the news, since synthetic fiber-free high-quality wool yarn is worth its weight in gold. As she researched the topic further, it turned out that it is a global problem. The industry prefers the production of synthetic fiber clothes, since it is cheaper and easier to produce, even though synthetic fiber clothes do not decompose (which is why they started organizing recycling), and the microplastics that enter the water during washing pollute the waters.
The production of wool involves an investment of energy for both the sheep and the shepherd, and it is a crime to burn such a waste material, causing air pollution. Large sheep-breeding countries such as England, Australia, New Zealand, and the USA have begun to experiment with alternative uses for wool. Wool has many favorable properties that make it useful in agriculture. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, but unlike fertilizers, it decomposes slowly, so the release of nutrients is gradual. It has extremely good water and air permeability, so it protects the soil from drying out, yet does not mold. It is an easy-to-use, practical mulch material due to its weed-suppressing ability and its snail-repellent effect.
When the company was founded in 2012, the main profile was research and development and innovation, and the various topics of our domestic and international projects were related to sustainable, environmentally friendly crop protection technologies. In 2021, when Andrea discovered wool mulch, she thought it was a new, innovative technology that also fit into the philosophy of their company. They decided to take the plunge and introduce wool mulch products to the Hungarian market and introduce the benefits of mulching to the professional audience and hobby gardeners. As a researcher, Andrea's main topics are the investigation of chemical-free alternative crop protection solutions and soil health. As a mother, she continues to investigate chemical-free methods in her own small garden that make our everyday lives easier and help us put healthy, nutrient-rich vegetables and fruits on the family table.
