Not all of our many, many beautiful birds move to warmer regions in the winter, and there are even some birds that seek refuge here for the winter.

Basically, the birds that stay in Hungary and come to us for the winter are able to get through the winter without human help, and even if a lot of snow covers the entire landscape, or the natural food bases are depleted, the birds are able to change their territory and look elsewhere for food.

Despite all this, feeding is a great relief and safety for our birds, and it is a wonderful experience for us to be able to watch them and identify which is which.

Continuity of feeding is important

When we start feeding, it is important to always provide them with food throughout the season. The birds get used to and count on the food placed out, they return year after year, even from a greater distance, so if we suddenly stop replacing the food, it can have fatal consequences for the small birds, since small birds can take in a small amount of food, they reserve as much as they can get through a freezing night. If they don't find food in a known place the next day, they can get into a very difficult situation.

The feeding period should last from the onset of the first lasting frosts until their end, i.e. from the beginning of December to the second half of March.

We can give seeds as food, the easiest is black sunflower. In addition, fruit (e.g. apple) and animal fat (duck, goose and pork skin) can be given.

However, we have to be careful, leftover food is not suitable for bird feeders.

In addition to feeding, it is worth placing a bird feeder in both winter and summer, because it is the real attraction for several species.
